What is Green Screen Technology?
Green Screen, also known as greenscreen video and chroma key, is the process of mixing two images together in which a single color, usually green, is removed from the background and replaced with a new image. You might also have heard of this technology being referred to as Blue Screen. This technique is used from weather forecasting to making of blockbuster feature films, alum covers, music videos, etc...
Under this method, the background is all together eliminated. You could amalgamate various designs or images. For instance, if you want to mix individual pictures of friends into one, then you could mix them by removing the backdrop. So it is with one screen that you get to make interesting mixtures of images and not by using many background screens.
Green Screen Technology makes the impossible happen in movies and makes it look totally real... For example:
* In the movie ET, how did they make it look completely real when the boys' bicycles began flying? * In the movie Star Wars, how did they make it look completely real when Luke flew his X-wing fighter down the trench of the Death Star with Twin Ion Engine fighters in close pursuit? The X-wing fighter, TIE fighters and the trench were all models... * In the movie Return of the Jedi, how did they make it look completely real when Leia and Luke were flying at 100 mph on their speeder bike through the forest? * In the movie Back to the Future, how did they make it look completely real when the DeLorean car took off and started flying down a suburban street? * Even on the TV news every night, how do they make it look completely real when the weather person is standing in front of an animated weather map full of computer graphics?
In all of these cases, the illusion is created by a special effects technique known as traveling matte or greenscreen. This technique allows actors and scale models to find themselves in totally imaginary situations -- in space ships, dangling from rope bridges over gorges, flying through the air (a la Superman) -- and have it look completely real in the theater. The technique is used so often now that you don't even realize it. News reporters are made to look like they are on location when they are not, and complete segments in TV shows can be created this way to make it look like the segment was filmed on location when, in fact, no one left Los Angeles.
Here is a 3 step summary of how Green Screen works:
Step 1: Phantom City Studio begins by filming the talent in front of a special green background. Using HD video, green screen productions can be performed in studio or on location using our custom green screen collapsible sets with daylight balanced fluorescent lights.
Step 2: The resulting video is then run through a computer utilizing the latest in chroma key hardware technology. One of our green screen technicians manipulates the video with green screen specific software and separates the talent from their green background.
Step 3: With the green backdrop removed, we place the talent into a new digital scene of your choosing. The new scenes can be as elaborate as one of Phantom City Studio's hi-tech interactive studios or as simple as placing the talent in front of a new background or company logo. Our process can be done with multiple cameras live or in post-production. The chroma keying process can be either software or hardware based. Strictly software based chroma keying requires rendering which takes more time and is ideal for more intricate productions. Hardware based allows for real-time viewing of the output and is good for multi-camera real-time productions.
